Master the game of Klondike Solitaire with this comprehensive guide. Follow these four essential steps to improve your strategy and increase your winning percentage.
The Solitaire tableau consists of seven columns of cards. The first column has one card, the second has two cards, and so on until the seventh column which has seven cards. Only the top card in each column is dealt face-up initially. Above the tableau are four foundation piles (one for each suit) where you'll build your winning sequences. The remaining cards form the stock pile, which you'll draw from when you can't make moves on the tableau.
Goal: Move all 52 cards to the four foundation piles, building each suit from Ace to King (A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K).
On the tableau, you can stack cards in descending order (King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, etc.) with alternating colors - red cards on black cards, and black cards on red cards. For example, you can place a red 7 on a black 8, or a black Jack on a red Queen. When you move cards, any face-down cards beneath them are automatically revealed.
Kings have special power: Only Kings can be placed in empty tableau columns. This makes Kings valuable for creating new spaces and reorganizing your cards. Always think carefully before moving a King, as you're using one of your limited empty spaces.
When you can't make any moves on the tableau, click the stock pile to draw new cards. In Easy mode, cards are drawn one at a time, giving you access to each card as it appears. In Hard mode, cards are drawn three at a time, and you can only play the top card of the three - this requires more strategic planning and memory.
Pro tip: Before drawing from the stock pile, always check if you have any moves available on the tableau. Sometimes the best move is to reorganize your existing cards rather than drawing new ones.
As Aces become available (either from the tableau or the stock pile), move them to the foundation area immediately. Once an Ace is in place, build up that foundation pile by adding cards of the same suit in ascending order: Ace, 2, 3, 4, and so on up to King. You win the game when all four foundation piles are complete.
Strategic consideration: While it's tempting to move cards to the foundations immediately, sometimes it's better to keep certain cards on the tableau temporarily if they're helping you make other moves. Balance building your foundations with maintaining flexibility on the tableau.
